So, I work with insurance claims all day, looking at estimates for damaged vehicles, police reports & photos of damaged/wrecked vehicles. Amid a sea of dinged Camrys & Civics there is occasionally something epicly amazing. From insane accidents, to destroyed vehicles to insurance company stupidity.
However privacy rules and a desire to keep my job means I can't share any of it with you. Which is frustrating because a lot of this would blow your mind. So instead have a pic I found online of a destroyed Peterbilt that is in better shape than the one I just finished auditing.

Nope. Because if the images get out, only a limited number of people will have had access to them, so I will be one of the suspects. And there is no way I am risking the job that keeps me housed, clothed & car-owning for a tiny bit of internet fame.

is there any time limit on them until they can be released? Or once it is in the file it stays?

Question: I don't want to sound grim, but how does collision insurance work in the event of a fatality?

It is a privacy thing. These are private documents related to an insurance claim which my company(we are a 3rd party) only has for auditing purposes and we agree never to do anything with them not related to our audits. So I'd be violating my company's contract with our customers, so there would be zero leeway/sympathy/etc. if I was they guy who fucked up a contract potentially worth millions.

If the person who caused the accident dies, the insurance gets attached to "The Estate of Joe Schmo" and as long as they were insured at the time of the accident the policy pays out to the other party.
if the person who was hit dies, then the insurance company pays out to "The Estate of Joe Schmo" and if becomes part of that persons estate to be distributed among their heirs per their will or state guidelines.
The only thing it really messes up is the lack of a statement if the facts of the loss are in question, and getting the vehicle released from storage and/or the title released if it is totaled. Fortunately not stuff I have to deal with because I see the documents long after the claim is settled.
The people here who do motorcycle claims have said about 50-80% of totaled motorcycles are being paid out to the estate.
